There has been much talk about laser treatment to Quit Smoking in the press of late. The treatment has been reported about on national TV throughout the US and across Europe. Of course, with such incredible claims of success, the question everyone is asking is, does it work?

The basis for laser treatment to Quit Smoking is the same concepts used within acupuncture, the ancient Chinese approach to healing. Acupuncture is an art form that uses micro needles, about the width of a human hair, to stimulate ‘energy points’ around the body.

By using laser therapy to quit smoking, people who are squeamish of needles or who have a phobia to them, can overcome the fear and try to have their energy centres stimulated.

But coming back to the original question, does laser treatment to quit smoking actually work; we must first ask if acupuncture works. After all, laser treatment is a modern day version of the ancient art of acupuncture on which it is based.

Clinical studies comparing acupuncture against other methods has found that in the medium to long term there is no evidence to suggest acupuncture benefits people wanting to quit smoking.

On an anecdotal basis of course, there are people who have successfully quit smoking after having laser treatment or acupuncture. However, from a statistical point of view, the evidence suggests that acupuncture treatments are unsuccessful.

Laser treatment to quit smoking has had very little clinical research done on its effectiveness but as it is based on acupuncture it should be safe to conclude that it is no better than trying to quit smoking cold turkey.
