The Increased Teenage Smoking And Tobacco Use
Alarming statistics now show that in the US, teenage smoking and tobacco use is an ingrained habit. As many as 25% of 12th grade students and 28% of high school students smoke daily.
What Are The Smoking And Tobacco Facts?
Reliable studies have now shown that some 6,000 teens begin to smoke everyday, 2,000 of whom will mature into smoking adults. Of today’s adult smokers, 80% say they began the habit before age 18.
Many teens that smoke say they would wish to quit cigarettes but are unable to. By the time one has smoked their 100th cigarette, they are definitively hooked on the habit.
Why do teens smoke?
Teenagers in their search for adventure and behaving in ways they consider cool or even breaking the rules. Unless well educated on the dangers, smoking can look very attractive.
Independence, glamor and even strength are often the messages that advertisers depict around smoking and a fragile teenage mind can easily be misled.
The addiction.
Nicotine is the active drug present in tobacco that causes addiction and dependency. Like most other addictions smoking plays on the victims low self-esteem and low self-image.
A teen smoker very often develops other anti-social behaviors like aggressiveness and is more likely to abuse other drugs and substances like alcohol.
The case for intervention in teenage smoking and tobacco abuse is very strong, more than this the health of the teenage smoker is in great jeopardy.
